Top 5 DTH Brands In India in 2021: Direct-to-Home (DTH) television service is a medium of receiving satellite television by means of signals transmitted from direct-broadcast satellites.

The Government of India (GoI) permitted the reception and distribution of satellite television signals in the year 2000. The first DTH service company in the country was Dish TV on 2 October 2003.

DD Free Dish, the first truly free DTH service in India, was launched by Prasar Bharati the public broadcaster in December 2004.

1. DD Free Dish – 40 million Subscribers

DD Free Dish, earlier known as DD Direct Plus is the first free-to-air satellite television service provider in India. The brand is owned by state broadcaster Doordarshan, which is owned by the government of India.

It has a subscriber base of more than 40 million households, more than 25% of the total TV households in the country. DD Free Dish earns most of the revenue by selling slots to private network broadcasters through the e-auctions method.

Currently, DD Free Dish showcases more than 110 TV channels, along with a few educational channels for classes 1 to 12, run under the PM e-Vidya program.

2. Tata Sky – 23.44 million Subscribers

Tata Sky is one of the top DTH service brands in Indian with more than a 23.44 million subscriber base. The Direct-To-Home Television broadcast service provider using MPEG-4 digital compression technology to provide better picture quality and transmit using INSAT-4A and GSAT-10 satellite.

Tata Sky brand was established in 2006, and it is a joint venture between the Tata Sons and The Walt Disney Company (Previously owned by Fox), with Temasek Holdings as a minor partner.

The DTH service provider currently offers a total of 601 channels, out of which 495 are SD channels and 99 are HD channels and services, along with a few other active services.

3. Dish TV – 18.06 million Subscribers

DishTV is the pioneer of direct broadcast satellite service provider in India owned by the Zee Group. DishTV was launched by the Zee Group back on 2 October 2003. Dish TV is one of the largest DTH brands in India in 2021 with a subscriber base of 18.06 million.

When DishTV was launched the company decided not to compete against cable TV operators in metros and most urban areas, and instead focused on providing DTH services to rural customers not serviced by cable television.

Dish TVĀ  also completed a merger with Videocon d2h, creating the largest paid DTH service provider in India at the time of the merger.

4. Airtel Digital TV – 17.86 million Subscribers

Airtel digital TV is another DTH service provider with a huge subscriber base of 17.86 million owned and operated by Bharti Airtel. Its satellite broadcast service was launched in October 2008 and transmits digital satellite television and audio to households in India.

Airtel Digital TV provides most of the SD and HD channels and also provides on-demand services on connected boxes that include a catalog of movies, TV series, and other programs across English and various other Indian languages.

The company is backed by a strong group and it is one of the most famous DTH brands in India in 2021.

5. Sun Direct – 11.60 million Subscribers

Sun Direct is one of the leading Indian direct broadcast satellite service providers with a huge market share in south India. The DTH service brand was launched back in December 2007.

The company transmits digital satellite television and audio to Indian households. It uses MPEG-4 digital compression, transmitting HD Channels on GSAT-15 and SD Channels on MEASAT-3. Sun Direct currently offers more than 465 channels and services, along with some active services.

Sun Direct has over 11.6 million active subscribers as of 31 March 2021, making it the 5th largest DTH brand in India in 2021.
